I may start the diet a day or two earlier than expected. I originally decided to start on Saturday but I'm so excited about changing my diet around I've already halfway started.

I did some looking around and decided on a decent little meal plan for the detox phase.

8:00 Breakfast: Cup of oatmeal with a little milk. Fruit if I'm in a hurry.
11:00 Snack 1: Choice of apple, grapes, or a banana.
1:00 Lunch: Brown rice with lentils (steamed broccoli is a possibility, or delicious steamed asparagus)
3:00 Snack 2: Same as snack 1.
5:00 Dinner: Warmed up soup and/or leftover rice and veggies from lunch.
~8:00 Tea before bed

It was easier to come up with this than I thought (probably because it's as bland as my current diet). Anyways, I went to the store with this menu made out and bought enough food for the next 9 days. I'm going to make a bunch of soup and warm it up. So far I've got tomato and vegetable soups.

I've never cooked anything from scratch. At all. It all comes out of a box. I decided to be adventurous tonight and found a recipe for tomato soup. It seems like it will fit the detox phase (tomatoes, onion, vegetable broth, dill, garlic, and a pinch of salt and pepper). I was skeptical when I started making it (I made the broth myself :D) but it turned out absolutely delicious. I'm looking forward to eating it again and hope it tastes as good heated up. I'm very proud of myself, even though it was a very simple recipe.

Tomorrow night I'll start on the vegetable soup, covering dinner. Then I have my grapes (frozen and refrigerated), apples, bananas, fresh pineapple, and carrots to snack on. I'll make my oatmeal in the morning before work and come home to cook some rice for lunch.

I can do this. It's actually more than I usually eat so hunger won't be an issue, I'm hoping.

Food is settled and I'm getting into the groove of my walking. I'm up to an hour at 3 miles an hour before breaking a sweat. It's all very fun, which is giving me hope for my staying power. My sedentary lifestyle up to this point has proven pretty boring so I'm excited to actually be doing something in my free time besides watching television and eating frozen pizzas.

3 days until start of diet. Or Friday if I'm feeling frisky :)

I'm trying to make out a menu for the detox phase, but I'm having a bit of trouble.

I don't eat a lot. I never eat breakfast (a small glass of juice out the door in the mornings is about it), I generally eat a light lunch at about 1:00 and a big dinner later on. So, wrapping my mind around the whole "5 meals a day" is a bit much.

My job requires me to be out in the sun all day, so keeping fresh fruits and vegetables laying around presents a bit of a problem. So maybe I'll have to stick with fruits like apples and bananas that will keep?

I'm thinking of a schedule something like this:

8:00 Meal 1 Breakfast
11:00 Meal 2 Snack (Maybe an apple?)
1:00 Meal 3 Lunch
5:00 Meal 4 Snack (Home by then, so no worries)
8 or 9 Maybe a cup of tea

I'm not creative in a culinary sense at all. I rarely cook. I think the most complex dish I've ever cooked was pork chops long ago so in my mind my meals are going to consist of eating nothing more complicated than some vegetable soup.

I'm a meat and potatoes kind of guy so complicated dishes don't really appeal to me. I'm not really interested in variety. As long as I'm getting something in my tummy I'm perfectly fine so making a bunch of soup might not be a bad choice.

I'm not starting the diet officially until the 28th (this saturday) but I'm preparing myself in the meantime by getting into the habit of walking 30 minutes a day and doing light weight lifts during. I'm also getting used to eating 4 smaller portioned meals a day.

I live in Mississippi and my whole life I've been surrounded by overweight people and fried foods. Tack onto this the fact that my mother rarely cooked growing up, choosing instead to get fast food every day for weeks at a time. It's a wonder I'm not huge right now. I'm satisfied with my appearance but not the way I eat.

I set my goal weight to 180 because that is safely in my optimal BMI weight.

I know the first phase will be hard. I love all kinds of fruit, as well as plain oatmeal. My only issue is vegetables. The only vegetables I particularly enjoy are corn, green beans, and english peas, and even then all smothered in butter. Getting used to the vegetables will be the hardest part, but I'm determined and if I have to choke it down, so be it.

5 days.
