Today I'm thinking salads, home gardens, and the slow approach of Spring. It will be time to plant lettuce soon, and nothing could have reminded me of that more than the launch of the new website at Mother Earth News.

Mother Earth News is my hands down favorite magazine. With articles on sustainable living, organic gardening, renewable energy and do-it-yourself it’s something I read and save for reference later.

The website they had before doesn't even compare to what they have up now. I blogged about the change yesterday, and today, quite by surprise, I received a comment their Managing Editor.



I saw a one pound increase in my weight this morning, but that was expected. I weighed in at 4 AM this morning, as I always do Monday through Friday. That's several hours earlier than my weigh-ins over the weekend which occur after I've had a long night's sleep and a few more hours to dehydrate.

This afternoon I'll be doing Chest, Back, and Abs with P90X. I'm not following P90X exclusively. I've given myself permission on some days, if I really feel like it, to do something else like bicycle riding, yoga, or lifting weights at the gym, but if you'd like to see what 90 days of P90X looks like check out these links:

What are burpees? - Here's a video on YouTube that explains 5 variations of them. Being able to crank a large number of these out (just the basic ones) remains a goal for me. It seems like a distant goal now, but I can't help keeping my eyes on it.

The scales reflect 4/10th of a pound off this morning, but again this is a weight that was recorded several hours later than my normal 4 AM weigh-in. As I'm writing this I'm thinking about the different philosophies on weighing in, and clearly mine is to do it every day. I follow the school of thought advanced by Dave Draper (my favorite bodybuilder) who akins skipping weigh-ins to driving blind. Of course, everyone can have their own right answer on this, but I've found that if I'm following my diet properly, consuming the required quantity of water each day, and weighting at the same time each morning (on good scales) I don't experience those small fluctuations in weight, and if I do notice one I only have to look back to the day before to explain it.

A small increase on the scales usually means 1) I ate a higher than normal amount of carbs the previous day, 2) I failed to drink enough water which actually results in the bodiy retaining water, or 3) I weighed at an earlier time in the day.

By the way, Dave Draper has an excellent newsletter and an even more interesting life story. If you're looking for some inspiration and especially if you're a little older you might find it an enjoyable read.

Awww yeaaa... Finally a day to carb-up! I began my morning with 3/4 cup whole oats (dry, Splenda), 1 large banana, and a 2 scoop Muscle Milk.

For the rest of the day I'll stick largely to plan with the exception of dinner where I plan to have a nice serving of butter beans with my rasberry pork tenderloin. That veggie I enjoy but usually avoid during midweek opting instead for things like broccoli, cauliflower, and asparagus stir fry (Walmart blend).

Sometimes I get really burned out on broccoli.. :P

Another pound is off today, but that's overstated a bit. My water consumption was consistent yesterday, but I weighed at 7:30 this morning as opposed to 4 o'clock, which is when I normally get up. I've learned that two extra hours of dry sleep can easily result in the drop of one pound on the scale so I guess I'll call this one even.

While performing experimental brain surgery intended to suppress the appetite of a 50 year old obese man, Canadian scientists may have discovered a way to reverse loss of memory. When electrodes were pushed into the patient's brain and stimulated with current, instead of losing his appetite, the man had an intense experience of déjà vu and recalled a scene from 30 years earlier in intricate detail. Tests also showed his ability to learn was dramatically improved.

At home, the diet is going well. I'm down another half pound this morning, and I'm looking forward to my first carb-up tomorrow. Also, most of the muscle soreness I blogged about yesterday is gone, so I plan on returning to a regular workout this afternoon. - I think I'll focus on arms, shoulders, and abs.
