I never realized how much food controlled my life until I really mentally prepared myself to get focused about losing weight. When my boyfriend came in town to visit I wanted to celebrate by eating. When I bought a new car I wanted to celebrate by eating a pint of Ben N Jerry's. I'm gonna be driving 6.5 hours to go home for Christmas and I am already thinking about one of my favorite restarants that I want to stop by. The list goes on and on.... Well I'm gonna turn this thing around! I am gonna control my life, not ice cream and cookies! :) I walked for 40 minutes today and stuck to my diet.

I was reading an article today about emotional eating, it was really interesting. We are pretty much taught from birth that food is comfort, love, security, ect. When we were kids, our parents made us special foods on our birthdays, took us out for ice cream after winning soccer games, gave us treats to cheer us up when we skinned our knees and gave us candy for behaving. No wonder we still use food to reward ourselves as adults. We've been rewarded with food, and taught to depend on it during bad times, ever snce we were very young. I myself have to stop and really concentrate sometimes to figure out why I am attached to certain foods. For example, I have been looking forward to Christmas day largely because I have decided to have a cheat day and have Christmas cookies. Why am I so intent on eating cookies at Christmas time? It's not like cookies are only around once a year. Christmas isn't about cookies, I could make those cookies and enjoy in moderation after i got to my ideal weight. But I have associated having a good time on Christmas with cookies and such, and when I look back at my childhood, Mom always baked lots of cookies for "Santa". It's not that it's wrong to have treats now and then, but it is interesting to figure out where these attachments originated.

It's true! Hope you have a good drive home and aren't tempted! Good job on the exercise!

On your drive, make sure you pack your food, don't buy it on the road. Carrots and celery is free on EFS, so that would be what I suggest. I used to travel 5 hours home, and I'd get a BAG of Doritto's and a 2 liter of Coke for the drive. There'll be more temptation for mindless eating. Have a safe trip!

You are so right, but rest assured that you can do this and you can make something else your "Celebration thing" very soon! Stick with it, you can do this! Have a very safe drive home and enjoy yourself, this time of year is hard to stick to a diet, just know that you have the new year coming up! You can do it!!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
