Bad news today, unfortunately. It seems I've reached a plateau at 131 lbs.

Luckily, there are ways that people can get past plateaus. I'm going to try one of them today: a spike. I'm going to eat a normal amount of food for one day, and then return to my diet. I've heard it can jump start your metabolism, so that you can continue losing weight. I'm not sure how effective it is going to be, but it's the only thing I know how to try.

Till next time.

Good luck! That usually works for me - though admittedly, the spike isn't always on purpose XD

Metabolic spikes (while still not confirmed scientifically) seem to work for me. I schedule them into my regimen to try to control them. Another very common reason for plateaus can be water retention. Are you getting enough potassium? Sometimes you can be burning fat and retaining water which ends up looking on the scale like stalled weight loss.

I'm not sure. Usually, I drink 1/2 cup green smoothie for breakfast, a bite of a sandwich for lunch, and a bite of whatever my parents make for dinner. I also eat about 4-5 wheat thins throughout the day as a snack to keep me from passing out. Are there any foods (other than bananas, of course) that are potassium-rich?

Yams and Sweet potatoes actually have MORE potassium than bananas and easy to microwave! 😊

Thanks so much!

You could also always put a bit of banana in your smoothie. Remember you don't necessarily need an excess of potassium, just enough to have a good sodium/potassium balance for regulating the water in your body.

Honestly it sounds like you are eating too few calories. Does a bite of dinner mean literally a bite? If you don't give yourself enough calories, your body will literally go into starvation mode, holding onto any calories it gets. Hence, a plateau. Try eating more on a daily basis, not just for one day.

Jadeheather's right about that too. Based on your previous post, that consistent 500 kcal diet may well have the opposite effect. You'll burn less fat because your body will want to retain it for emergency energy stores, and you will burn muscle instead (and retain water, hence the plateau). If you are able to maintain a caloric deficit (ie. your calories expended are greater than your calories eaten) you will see weight loss. If the deficit is too great though (example: your kcals eaten are 500 and your kcals expended are 2500), you may well see negative effects, including a weight plateau.

You need to eat to loose weight. Every three hours very small. Don't go under 1000 cal/day or your body with hold onto your fat stores as it thinks it's in a famine state. Just saying :))). Good luck!

Starvation mode is a myth - the body does not "hold on to" the calories. The metabolism will slightly adjust to a lower intake, that is all. The other phenomenon people call starvation mode is when you eat less earlier in the day, and overeat later in 'compensation', which (duh) can lead to weight gain. @itsfuntofantasize: I won't try to dissuade you from your intake, but I will say that from my experience (personal and secondhand), it is unsustainable. Make sure that you are getting adequate protein and hydration as much as is possible with whatever your choices may be, and don't be too hard on yourself if - eventually - you do need to up your intake to function. :)

Also, @louiserachel, we all have different metabolisms. I can maintain on anywhere from 1200ish cals to 1700ish cals. The only way for me to see any sort of noticeable weight loss is to go below 1000 cals because of my particular metabolism. It's entirely possible it's the same for the OP.

Try fasting for a day.

@losing_lily. I'll do that. Thank you so much!
03 may. 17 por el miembro: itsfuntofantasize
@ApacheTiger37 I'll try that! Probably on Sunday--I need some calories to sustain me on the other days cause of my play rehearsals. Thanks!

So, I have to disagree with one part of losing_lily's posts. That is that starvation mode is not a myth, but the idea that your body 'holds on' to calories isn't accurate. Your body needs to burn calories just to stay alive. Your body will hold o to fat stores, but will obviously still need to burn calories in order to expend energy, which can lead to burning muscle instead. Other effects can include a reduced immune system and lack of cognitive function (which reduce your energy output and conserve calories).
