I'm trying again to come back to Fatsecret and make a commitment to my fitness. I've been really struggling over the past year and recently took a "personal wellness profile" at work. It's an optional program, available to anyone at work, and completing it gets you a bunch of information, a free fitbit, a reduction in insurance costs, and some consultation. Results came back saying I am "obese," which really freaked me out. What a crappy word.

I also realize that I struggle with this privately at home because I have two tween daughters (10 and 12) who are really fit and don't have the kind of body issues that a lot of girls/women have. I know that mothers are really important in shaping how daughters think about their bodies. I want to be a good role model for them by not talking about how "fat" I am or how I need to diet to get skinny or anything like that. We play soccer together and do active things as a family, and I like that. But I still am way heavier than I should be. How do I maintain a sense of body confidence for my girls while I personally struggle with my frustration at my own body?

Anyway, sorry to be such a downer. I've been terribly discouraged. Despite my earlier successes several years ago, I'm right back where I was when I first started Fatsecret and I realize that I need the support of this community to help me get back in control of my weight. Support and suggestions are welcome. :)

Oh gracious, my 12 year old daughter is now in the kitchen making cookies with her friend after school. Snickerdoodles, I think. It smells really good, but I'm going to stay strong.

I did not eat any of the cookies, and I'm glad about that. I've had a good day in terms of food and exercise.

Herbie, don't make it about weight, make it about health. Don't make it a 'diet', make it a lifestyle change. That doesn't mean you can't have cookies or anything else. It just means you are going to be conscious of what you are putting in your mouth. There is a wealth of information on the internet. I have been working at my weight since last March when I weighed 321 lbs. I am 67 years old. I will shortly be 68. I have gotten down to 227 this week. That's 94 lbs. I still have quite a ways to go. I am never hungry. One of the most important things I can tell you is to EAT BREAKFAST. When I started is was severely limiting carbs for the first few weeks. I have stayed away from wheat. I have yogurt at least 2x a day. Read, read, read and adjust your diet to things you like to eat. You might want to add Vit D to your regimen. Obesity causes a lack of D. Read the literature and talk to your doctor. Good luck!! You CAN do it!!!

Just started back trying to be good again myself...actually last couple years been slowly taking it off cause became diabetic...and our job has the same type of program...this year they added BMI had to be within range or you get penalized on insurance. But at least they added a coach nutritionist so just met with her last week and found this application. goal is 45 carbs per meal... Good luck.

You're gonna love the Fitbit. It's a great tool, especially if you get "friends" and compare your steps with theirs. It helps keep me active and lets me measure my activity levels.

I am newly returned to FS myself. Today, my 9yo daughter was looking over my shoulder when I recorded my food. She was very interested in how it works, so I showed her around the site, explaining how I keep track of things and what I hope to accomplish. I told her that I want to be healthy and it is important to eat right and stay active and that this helps me pay better attention to things. She was very excited about the whole process and later reminded me to be sure to put dinner in my food list. My view is that I want to be straightforward with her. I don't have a bad body image--in my mind, I am still that sexy, thin 20yo! :) I agree with LVLinda that if you make it about your health. Emphasize that it is important to take care of yourself, a lesson every young woman needs to learn. :) Good look to you!
