I am not alarmed about the sudden rise unless it follows a tendency over a longer time like a week. I was used to a big drop every day for the first days. To be realistic somebody of my size and activity can not possibly loose more than 500g of real body fat a day unless my activity increased dramacticaly and I barely ate or not at all. I did loose almost 5kg over the course of the week, how much of that was water. I cannot imagine all of it is only water but maybe most of it. Did my previous diet cause a lot of water retention (to that extend) or are there other factors. Maybe the sudden change in diet or ketosis has some diuretic effect. But loosing 5l of your body's water under normal circumstances seems strange. I though I was just fat and not also oedemic. However I like the outcome because I cannot say that I cheated the diet in anyway since I started or at least being deliberate about it. I did track my calories fairly accurately in my opinion. Maybe it is just the natural course of this, I hear people talk about this so I was never too over optimistic or unrealistic. I just hope some of that was actually body fat.

Ketogenic diet is very diuretic in nature. Initially expect your kidneys to chuck out a lot more water than normal. Make chicken or marrow bone broth to keep up your salt intake...it will also help with the side effects of keto flu. Enjoy the journey. You will never look back!

Uugh, I don't feel flu but just irratble otherwise. I thought it would be the high Sodium content of my intake that causes water retention and maybe gave rise to the last weight increase. Do you know the physical mechanism of the diuretic effect? Is it the high amount of ketones in the blood or some other hormonal response?

Your brain is not getting those high levels of serotonin if you are reducing carbs to get into ketosis...so it is natural that your body is adjusting and you might feel crabby for a few days. Eventually your body will turn to stored fats for energy (as opposed to glucose) and thats when your body becomes a fat burning machine! The feelings of wellness will be better than you have ever experienced in your life....the brain "fog" will be gone, so hang in there. With regards to your question.....people who eat a lot of carbohydrates..especially things like starchy veg, rice, bread, past....grains, gluten etc have a high level of inflammation....when the body is inflamed it responds by holding onto a lot of water in the hope that it can reduce the inflammation....this results in bloating and if you are insulin resistant the belly will be large and look bloated. While the body feels toxic it continually tries to find a healthy balance. And if this inflammation is not alleviated it leads to many chronic diseases...cancer, obesity, dementia, heart disease, cancer, and more. Carbohydrates causes inflammation (while dietary fat reduces inflammation).....so don't forget your healthy fats...olive, avocado, coconut oil and butter :)

Thanks LowCarbFemmeFit! Do you perhaps know what happen to people who have adapted to being ketogenic and then suddenly consume a large amount of carbohydrates? Do they become physicaly an acutely sick? I am asking because I was vegetarian a few years back for almost 4 years and meat didn't agree with me initialy, I had to start with small amounts of fish then chicken before I could move on to red meats again.
