Bloody Abs :(

I am having a little trouble doing Sit-ups. Every time I do 2-3 sets, next day I feel soreness. Though there is no pain in normal position, but I feel pain during stretching and more pain if I do sit-ups again or do push-ups.

Apparently, this phenomenon does not happen when i do heavy calisthenics for other muscle groups.

Yesterday I did 3 sets and had pain today. What my gym-buddy suggested is to push myself and do the sit-ups again even with pain, and the pain would fade away in a few days. But I did not do it. Though I could have bore the pain, but I am not sure of this and do not want to take any risk of permanent damage.

Confused, should I do sit-ups or push-ups tomorrow?

I suggest doing the sit-ups every other day. Sounds like your core is weaker (like most of us) and needs the rest in between days. The pain is normal (unless it feels like you ripped something). Like any other muscle, they heal on the down day. Good luck!

I am kind of following a modified diet, but one thing I'm incorporating is the exercise regime from "Body For Life". It is recommended that you alternate muscle groups every other day... Upper body one day, lower the next to give the muscles time to rebuild in between because you are ripping them when you work them. I agree with sadler75race... maybe you should work your stomach every other day. Good luck! =)

You may also want to consider using planks to strengthen your core instead of the standard crunches. The movement of crunches can be a killer on one's lower back and there are new views that they are not the most effective way to strengthen the abs. Besides planks, there are also some standing Pilates moves that you can do to strengthen without stressing the back. Also, it is not recommended to do abdominal work every day. The muscles need time to heal the small tears we make in them when we exercise (this function is what allows the muscle to strengthen and grow larger). If you work those muscles everyday, they do not get the time needed to repair and you shortchange your progress in the long run. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Thanks guys for suggestions. I understand your point. @ youngsturgeon - I do plank pose every day and try to do 1-1.5 minute pose. For side pose I manage to do 20-25 seconds only.
