I can't say that I'm surprised.
45 days off the rails, 11 pounds regained.
I've done this before and know what to do now. It starts with recording everything that I eat. Luckily, I should lose a few pounds quickly, building a little positive momentum. Then, I figure it'll take a while to get back to where I was a month and a half ago. That's okay.
The next few days will be tough, battling cravings and new, bad habits, and this weekend will be tough, with travel and a big family get-together, but so be it.
The good news is that my mental state is right where it needs to be. I'm not feeling particularly down about my gain, as I knew that it was happening. As crazy as it sounds, I'm relieved that I _only_ gained 11 pounds.

"I've done this before and I know what to do now." Yup. That about sums it up for me after a four-day cooking/eating festival with not a lot of walking. Good for you for not beating yourself up and just moving forward. Me too.

They say the "average" person gains 15 pounds from Halloween to New Years...you are above average since you gained less! LOL

Our mental state is what makes or breaks things. Yours being where it needs to be is exactly what is needed to get back on track, let's do it.

Thanks for that, HCB! I'll take it. Unfortunately, I tend to put on around 10 pounds this time of year. Oh well. Have to keep working.

I'm in the same place-12 pounds regained. You hit it when you said bad habits. Look back at your journal and revisit the good habits you acquired when you were on a pounds losing streak. It is HARD with all of the yummy foods and social obligations..but helpful advice is to dress up and look your best so you feel better too. Less chance of a backslide in snug pants rather than comfy drawstring or stretchy :) Keep up the positive attitude-you'll do fine!

Thanks, LightAir. You offer some great suggestions here, especially looking back at good habits and dressing better. I work from home, so it's easy to just stay in the same sweatpants all day.

P.S. Best of luck with your own return to form, LightAir!

Mental state is key. All dietary slip upsand pauses are due to loss of the appropriate mental state.
When you have it then guard against all rationalizations. Wild with hunger? Remove yourself from current location and engage in a different activity since there are cues in your current environment and activity that are promoting hunger and will go away if you remove yourself and do something different. A slice of pickle on the tongue may help too. Or a caper. Don't swallow it. Suck on it.

Thanks, Steven, my guru. Yesterday was easier than expected, and so far, things today are cool. I'm wondering if the slower, steadier, more balanced weight loss and the slower, less insane, insidious weight gain have left me in a better place vs. my old yo-yo-ing. We'll see. But I'm happy that things are going smoothly so far.

Thanks, Marcus. Great points. And pickles have been a secret weapon of mine down through the years.

Wishing you strength for this upcoming week! Emotions, food, love are so connected...my family makes it hard to diet. They tell me to eat and enjoy life, only to comment that I put on weight later! I love being with family too, but I always have to mentally prepare myself before and after seeing them. What saved me last time was having several containers of fresh raspberries and mint available and Perrier on hand, and thinking to myself, "cheese should be savored in dainty portions. Try to think of it as though it is butter" (they almost the same calorie-wise). Good luck :)
