Diario de Herbie, 17 abr. 15

I'm doing fine overall, but am feeling sad and a bit worried right now. I'm in my early 40s. I just had my first mammogram last week and the clinic called and said I need to come back in "for more pictures" to look at one spot more closely. I'm going in today, won't know results until early next week.

The rational part of my brain says that it's probably nothing. People get called back in all the time, and since this is my first scan they want to have a very good reading of everything. But I can't help but worry. I have so many friends who've had cancer, it is just shocking to me how common it is. Although I don't have any family history, which is good, I'm still very unhappy about the uncertainty this brings and the possibility of something very bad. Plus, I live in a small town, so now I am not sure how much to trust the clinic here and wonder if I'll need to go up to the hospital in the city an hour or so away. And it is frustrating to feel so helpless about my body right in the middle of my big effort to have more control over my health. Reminds me that we really can only control so much.

All of that is premature, of course, and I'm trying to listen to my rational brain. It's. Probably. Nothing. Wish me luck.

I also am selfishly sad that my closest friend here is moving for a year and I won't see her much. That's unrelated to this, of course, but adds to my feeling of sadness right now.

Listen to the rational part of your brain. I've been called back before too but it turned out to be nothing. But, it is good to know that if it is "something" it is always best to get it taken care of early. Take care!

I'm sure your rational brain is correct. You mentioned this is happening "right in the middle of my big effort to have more control over my health". Regardless of the outcome of this "call back", being in better health will allow you to better tackle the future health concerns that are a part of aging. Additionally, exercise will help you reduce the stress both now and in the future. That won't make the worry go away, but it will better equip you. We are all becoming stronger and healthier people as a result of this journey we are on. We are becoming the masters of our bodies and our health. We are honing these lumps into the best bodies they can be. Nothing but good can come from that. GOOD LUCK and Keep a positive attitude.

Thinking of you today and praying that God will provide you with extra strength to handle all that is occurring in your life at this moment.

This happened to me. If it is your first scan they almost always call you back because they don't have anything to compare it to. I've had 3 scans and was called back on the first two. Third one was problem free! So don't worry unless you need to. Good Luck!

I was called back at my first mammo too. I had to have an ultrasound done, and the radiologist said "You have masses deep inside both breasts". I almost coded on the table. Then he says "But they're benign." I thought that was a cruddy way to tell me I was fine. My second mammo I was not called back. It's my understanding it's VERY common to be called back for more films or an ultrasound (especially if you have dense breasts). Will pray that all turns out well for you!

Good news! They called much sooner than I expected and said the scans were normal. I'm so relieved... and a bit sheepish for getting so freaked out. Thanks for all the kind words.

Woohoo! :) No sheepishness allowed. We've been there - we're women - we get it!

Great news! And who can blame you for freaking out. No one likes to deal with uncertainty.

Yes, it was such great news that I celebrated by having both apple and pecans on my salad at lunch. How extravagant! LOL
