Hope he gets better. My son was diagnosed with it several years ago. Had to read up on it also and the doctors where able to make it sound a bit easier to understand.

Fludder, I suffered with diverticulitis for YEARS (literally a decade or more). I was diagnosed in my early 20s and eventually ended up with a perforated colon which resulted in temporary colostomy at 30 yrs old. Thank goodness I only had to deal with the colostomy bag for 8 mos, at the end of which I was able to have the resection reversed and everything hooked back up (that was almost 7 years ago now, and NO flare ups since then). After doing a BUNCH of research on diverticulitis, diverticulosis, Crohn's dz, etc: staying away from simple carbs (starches, sugars etc) is the key! There is a TON of old school mentality information out there that will tell you to stay away from nuts and seeds but really, that's only during a flare up, and to be perfectly honest, ANY food is likely to get caught in the diverticulum (pockets), so the whole nuts and seeds theory goes right out the window. Taking a good quality probiotic (acidophilus/bifidum) with PLENTY of live cultures in it will help repair the gut and keep things healthy in there. And the reduction (and elimination) of simple carbs will IMMEDIATELY have an anti-inflammatory effect on the gut itself and soothe it. Best of luck to DH, it's a commitment to lifestyle change that will eliminate that disorder.
