To all those doing keto longer than I have. I've been struggling with low energy levels and flatulence for the entire month and a half I've been doing this. Am I doing something wrong, is this normal?

I’m not doing keto but I’ve been on a ketogenic diet before and I remember having little no symptoms that you are experiencing. Do you have heart burn or indigestion as well by any chance?

Nope not me on Keto. Do you use any kind of probiotic? Might help..

Just some thoughts from me. I think I remember you saying you were going to order keto sticks, did you? Definitely worth checking if you are in Ketosis. For me when I feel weak and listless it’s usually if I am out of ketosis. With it still being very new for your body it probably won’t take much for you to go out of ketosis and probably take quite a while to get back into it (eg for me if I eat fruit I can go out of ketosis for 5 days!) Some other thoughts. I had a look through your food journal, and some suggestions I might make. Your breakfast looks quite small and you snacks look quite small but numerous. Have you considered maybe having a higher breakfast on account of giving you body some energy to face the day? Some keto people do miss breakfast because they do IF but personally I need a breakfast or I also feel weak. Maybe to also simplify your meals and diet for a bit, something like just eggs and butter and a green veg for breakfast but like 400-500 cals then for lunch similar just veg and protein and some fats. So aiming to have three bigger meals a day. This does also allow you body to use up some stored energy. Other thoughts, I see quite a bit of keto bread, where do you get it from? I have definitely found some keto breads from shops aren’t keto at all and put me totally out of ketosis (like spar low carb loaves etc) And maybe for dinners just meat and veg and fat. Might make it easier for your body to adjust. You could also possibly up your protein slightly. All just ideas 🤗 If you gut is struggling you could try use some probiotics or keffir etc and maybe some psyllium husks

@TarynJ-S i don't, actually, but I do have yogurt every now and then. Or is that not sufficient?

@jespes26 thank you for your in depth analysis and suggestions. The keto bread I use is from a place called clenergy in Johannesburg. I had my sister - in law who has been doing keto for a long time try it and she thinks it's fine, but I will mention it's not gluten free as it contains oats. I'm going to try the rest fo your suggestions. Currently I'm fasting, due to it being the month of Ramadan, but I'm going to try and heartier breakfasts. What do you think about my caloric intake? I've reduced my snacks for the time being and will try to ensure I don't have any in the future. Let's se ehow this goes. As for the keto strips, I did get them, so far I've done 3 tests. The second one was on the lighter side, like just above no ketones. My sister in law had been here that weekend and had recommended I bring down my protein and fat. And the third one, which I did a week after implementing her suggestions was negative.

Oats is not on the ketogenic list... that is what is probably stopping you from going into ketosis. Oats is high in carbs.I would ditch that bread. It’s definitely not keto friendly. For some people. They have to have their carbs 20grams and even lower to get into ketosis. Especially if you aren’t an active person and have a BMI over 30. Because you are probably insulin resistant. Even though nuts and cheese are on the allowed list. If I was you. I would cut that out too in the beginning. Just low carb veg, protein and stay away from processed meats and of course all fruits. Even including berries. Until you have gotten into ketosis and have dropped 10kgs to start. Then you can reintroduce some berries, cheese and nuts. That should be the time you watch the scale. To see how your body responds to those foods. Ramadan Mubarak ☪️ 🙂 btw. I’m also fasting for Ramadan but I don’t do the keto diet. I did in the beginning when I was insulin resistant. I always revert back to the keto diet when the scale doesn’t want to budge. But will long fasts, keto is not necessary for me. Fasting naturally gets you into ketosis especially if you’re not drinking anything as well.

@Fatgirlslim1982 even if it's in small amounts? Why do you think I'm insulin resistant? Ramadan Mubarak to you as well. 😊 I've heard so, therefore I'm hoping doing keto while fasting will Kickstart the ketosis. The idea of now having to restrict more foods is overwhelming, since it already feels like so much is restricted with keto 🙈🙊 But let me see how the fasting contributes and I'll take it from there. I generally don't do fruits to begin with, but I was going to start during Ramadan for sehri options, guess I gotta revisit that idea. Thank you for your insight.

Hi Ameera, fatgirlslim has hit it head in. Those oats will be definitely be keeping you out of ketosis which means you have not enough carbs for energy but no ketones for energy either hence the weak feeling. I go out of ketosis if I eat any carbs like that.

@jespes26 I'm glad it was brought to my attention as I was just about to order more. Is the banting revolution nut loaf fine? Cause that's what I've been having recently.

@Ameera, just to begin with. So you know what foods agree with you and what kicks you out of ketosis. When I did it. I found out that I don’t do well with cheeses and diary, even yoghurt... and I wouldn’t lose weight like I did when I didn’t eat them. Fruits I seem to digest well. And have no problem consuming more than I should on the keto diet. We are all different, so you might find out fruits don’t agree with you or diary or even certain veg. It’s the trial and error game in the beginning. Learning how our body responds to certain foods. When I was insulin resistant. Just cutting calories would not help me to lose the weight. I had to get rid of the carbs so I could get rid of the insulin resistance and become insulin sensitive again. Insulin is important but too much of a good thing causes a huge problem(type2 diabetes when insulin gets out of control). Even too much fat on the keto diet will hinder your progress. Your macros will change as you lose weight. Once you’re fat adapted. You can drop the fat intake. So your body can use your stored fat as fuel instead of the fat you’re consuming. Of course you will get hungry in the beginning. But once you’re in ketosis. You won’t feel hunger at all. You’re using your own body fat and don’t need much food until you are leaner. Disclaimer: this is advice, I’m not a doctor or dietian, the information I give is from my own experience. What works for me, might not work for others. Good luck and thank you for the wishes 💖

The Banting revolution nut loaf I don’t use but Taryn does and I think she stays in Ketosis. Also it’s quite a reputable company and their other products I do use and find very good. When I’m needing to get into Ketosis (if I go out) I limit my diet to veg, eggs, meat and some oil for cooking/salad. Usually takes me about three days to get back into ketosis. Similar to fatgirlslim, I do have to limit dairy which is often because dairy protein stimulates insulin release and insulin = no Ketosis.

Wow you gals are amazing. Such thorough advice and so spot on. I do use BR bread but not daily. I cut it back to be more of a treat than a staple. I also did limited dairy until after 10kgs but am fine with it now, not milk but cream and cheese seems good. Fruit is a no no for me. I started out doing lots of snacks and feeling deprived and hungry all the time but now hardly do. Seem to find the hunger is in my mind but not my body, if that makes sense. On the days I use more energy with exercise sometimes I get hungrier and then just up my cals a bit. I felt in the beginning like keto was very restrictive and I was also a lil obsessive about it but definitely more relaxed now. Can't go wrong with protein and veg. Keeping it simple works every time
