It’s hard sometimes to remember the advantages modern dieters have. Aside from fabulously convenient online trackers that keep us honest as well as motivated, we ordinary dieters have much better nutritional information than our parents did.

Most modern articles about weight loss point out that nearly any calorie reducing diet that can be maintained long enough will eventually result in weight loss. That comes after 20 or 30 years of research that suggested we all needed to rearrange our diets – low fat, low carb, dense carb, high protein, whatever. All those kinds of discoveries made us jump through hoops of fire as we tried to keep up with the latest trends, but ultimately we frontline dieters were all taught which fats are actually necessary and good for us, which carbohydrates will make us feel more satisfied and provide a better energy bang for the caloric buck, and which kinds of protein will give us what we need without clogging our arteries.

Few of us have any medical or nutritional training, yet we all commonly know that there is a sweet spot where a person’s caloric intake and energy expenditures are at levels that result in slow, but steady weight loss without sabotaging the metabolism rate.

Lengthy historical lectures to myself, like the one above, are among the kinds of mental gymnastics I have to perform to stay focused on my weight loss goals.

I should be happy about my routine right now.

I reduced my RDI without any fanfare at the end July. I know that even if I do little more than get out of bed and go to work, I can still expect to lose a pound or two a month as long as I stay true to the limits of my diet. I may not be making the absolute best food choices, but my ability to stay within those limits is improving. I’m developing a feel for how much is enough before I sit down to eat, and I’m learning the difference between a eating a portion of food that leaves me content and satisfied and eating a portion that leaves me sick and slightly high on the sudden carb influx.

My exercise routine is going fantastically well. There are no failures. My walking speed is up. My walking distance is up. I’ve incorporated rides on a stationary bike at home to stay on track on the days when my schedule or the weather do not allow me to walk outside. The intensity of the bike workouts is up. The total number of workouts per month is up. I am stronger. I am faster. I am sleeping better. I feel good about the way I move – I’m still not flexible, but I am much less stiff in general and I am no longer sore after working out. I feel good about the way I look. I can see where I’m starting to tighten up. I can feel my clothes hanging on me differently.

In the four months since I started with FS, I’m down 10 pounds. That’s good. It took me two years to put on the last 20 pounds, but I’m half way back down in less than a quarter of the time.

I’m succeeding no matter how I look at it, but the process still feels so tedious and long and slow and frustrating.

I’ve been using this site diligently for four months. Shouldn’t I get, like, a bonus fifteen pounds off just for being a consistent user?

Meh.

I’m cooking tonight for the first time in, like, five days. I haven’t felt like going grocery shopping so there was nothing in the house to cook even if I had had the ambition, but I’m getting tired of takeout. Seriously, if I don’t get some fresh broccoli or something soon, I’m going to kill someone.

I need to suck it up and trudge forward with the plan. I can’t get to where I’m going by standing here.

I love everything about this journal, and I wish they gave out honorary fat losses here, like attendance award in elementary school!! So proud of your progress and right there with you on the sentiment that it isn't always easy or perfect, but I keep getting stronger and more fit. (-: yay us!!!

Hey :) here is a pat on the back for doing SO WELL. You are right: you should be happy with your routine! You sound like you have got it figured out: a combinationation of mental & physical exercise that keeps you going!!! Yes the journey might feel tedious at times, but the upward hill wasn't done in a week either?! I have noticed how much better I sleep as well & I really enjoy that! But I still ache after exercise. Can't be a bad thing. Hope you enjoy your fresh home cooked meal :)
