I think I must have become a little deficient in potassium in the 8 months I have been pursuing this diet because of foods I have given up, like milk, yogurt, ice cream, and starchy legumes. I have had to rethink that sacrifice, because it was causing my diet to fail. I was having unbearable food cravings. Since there is potassium in most all foods the craving wasn't specific, and it was only the app Daily Nutrient that suggested that my intake of potassium was low. I had thought that the references in the Calorie Counter food diary just didn't list potassium all the time, so my level looked low. But something made me check it out and I'm glad I did. A week ago I thought I had just oversimplified my diet and needed more veggies, or fruit. Well, that was part of it. Now that I'm working on raising potassium I'm feeling even better. My sodium level and sugar have been a bit higher, too, but it's all working out. Watch your vitamins and minerals if you're on a diet for six months or more. If you have to lose 100+ pounds, you're going to be here for more than a year.

Hi San Francisco- good advise. I used to eat a half an avocodo everyday for the potassium but have started drinking a homemade electrolyte solution this summer. Potassium is so important. If you have muscle cramps in the night(or day) it is a sure sign your potassium levels are low, along with Calcium/Magnesium. I take quite a few supplements, including most importantly Calcuim and Magnesium, boron, vitamin D, and potassium.

I was definitely low on at least one mineral, potassium, and it wrecked my diet until I fixed the problem. Daily nutrient find and monitor the situation. I was using protien shakes twice a day rather casually. I didn't realize that I was missing so much mineral content that way. Probably my vitamin intake was challenged too. You can't live on supplements, and they can only help with some nutrients. There isn't a supplement that can give you all your potassium.
